Mental Health, Yoga, Ethics, Boundaries and More!

Mental Health, Yoga, Ethics, Boundaries and More!

Today I’m speaking with Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Teacher Dr Lauren Tober at Mental Health Aware Yoga. Lauren shares with us that we’re seeing so many people drawn to yoga for the mental health benefits (the stats show that 60% of students start yoga for this reason) – so it’s fundamental that teachers have an understanding of common mental health concerns. This is particularly relevant in light of recent world events such as the #metoo movement and coronavirus pandemic. We cover some big topics and I’ve got some seriously juicy questions. I think you’re going to LOVE IT!

Why You Are Immune to Imposter Syndrome (and what is ACTUALLY going on)

Why You Are Immune to Imposter Syndrome (and what is ACTUALLY going on)

Yoga Teachers often share with me that they feel like an imposter, and that their growth is constrained because they are worried they'll be 'found out'. In this episode I'm explaining why its simply not possible for any of us to have this syndrome, what is actually going on, and how we can grow past it.

Killing the Kauravas Within

Killing the Kauravas Within

In this episode we’re taking a look back on the family history that brought us to the moment of Arjuna slumped down in his chariot, confessing that he ‘Will not fight’: the beginning of the Bhagavad Gita. Arjuna’s cousins - the Kauravas - are a symbol of finite thinking. Of playing a zero sum game. Of hoarding. Of ‘Us OR them’. While most of the time we take a stand for abundance, sometimes this ‘zero-sum-game’ thinking can sneak in and sabotage us in life and biz.

Yoga, Representation and Ashtavakra

Yoga, Representation and Ashtavakra

In this storytelling episode I’m sharing a few of the mini tales of Ashtavakra, the namesake of the arm balance Ashtavakrasana. There is SO much in this story that we can apply to our classes, businesses and approach to life. I’m reading a short passage from Devdutt Pattanaik’s book ‘Sita: An Illustrated Retelling of the Ramayana’ (Penguin Books India, 2013).

Also, make sure you’re all signed up for ‘Yoga and Story’, my VERY exciting new course all about storytelling, mythology, philosophy, conversation and Yoga geek-down. Here’s the link: https://www.amymcdonald.com.au/story

Kumbhakarna and the Importance of Asking for What You Really Want

Kumbhakarna and the Importance of Asking for What You Really Want

In this special bonus episode we’re going back into the Ramayana but this time to learn from one of Ravana’s brothers, Kumbhakarna. If you ever teach breath retention, you’ve probably heard of this guy. But you might not know WHY we name this pranayama after him!

And if you want more Yoga Story good times, including how to weave mythology into your offerings, business and life sign up for my brand new course, Yoga and Story, here: https://www.amymcdonald.com.au/story

Dasamukha and How It Can Trip Us Up

Dasamukha and How It Can Trip Us Up

In this week’s episode I’m exploring how having ten heads could cause some setbacks (especially if you like diamond earrings… Or the first kiss… which face to choose? Perilous! Or food intake… does every head eat lunch?) And specifically, how getting too ‘heady’ can keep us stuck or addicted to external validation. Fun!
